Materials Characterization: High-Resolution Imaging from Micro to Nano Scale

To engineer advanced materials, we must first understand how they are built at the atomic, micro, and nano scales. Students in the Master of Science in Materials Science (MSI) program at Vietnamese-German University (VGU) recently tackled this challenge in the advanced Materials Characterization module.

The course was taught by Prof. Dr. Franziska Scheffler, Head of the Chair of Technical Chemistry (Lehrstuhl für Technische Chemie) at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU), Germany, delivering high-level German university instruction directly to our Binh Duong campus.

🔬 Core Characterization Techniques Mastered

Under the expert guidance of Prof. Scheffler, students explored the fundamental principles, quantum mechanics, and instrumentation behind the most powerful analytical tools in modern materials science:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM): Utilizing focused electron beams to capture stunning microstructural topography and cross-sectional morphology.
  • X-Ray Diffraction (XRD): Applying Bragg's Law to determine crystal structures, lattice parameters, and phase compositions of powders and bulk specimens.
  • Advanced Spectroscopy: Using molecular vibrations and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to map chemical compositions and trace elements.
  • Structure-Property Linkage: Training students to connect processing parameters with the resulting micro/nanostructures and macroscopic properties.

!NOTEWhy this matters for your Career: Materials characterization is a foundational skill for both scientific research and industrial quality control. VGU MSI graduates gain hands-on access to research-grade SEM and XRD equipment, preparing them to enter R&D, metallurgy, semiconductor, and polymer engineering fields globally.

🌎 A Research-Driven, Global Degree

At VGU, we believe that world-class engineering requires global collaboration. By learning directly from flying faculty like Prof. Franziska Scheffler, our students establish direct networks with German universities, opening pathways for fully-funded master thesis research, doctoral scholarships, and European careers.

We thank Prof. Scheffler for her inspiring course and her commitment to fostering the next generation of materials engineers in Vietnam!
