About Our Program
Materials Science is the backbone of modern engineering. At MSI, Engineering Materials are our core focus. We study how microstructures directly govern macroscopic mechanical, thermal, and functional properties — and how mastering these relationships unlocks better products, stronger structures, and smarter technologies.
We may not chase the edge-hype of exotic functional materials, but we deliver something more enduring: the foundational knowledge that runs the physical world and underpins the real economy. Think metals, ceramics, polymers, composites — the building blocks of every car, aircraft, semiconductor package, and energy system on the planet.
If you are fascinated by how atomic-scale structure dictates real-world performance, and how Engineering Materials drive technology — from automotive and aerospace to green energy and microelectronics — this program is for you.
You can explore the full range of our modules on the Program Structure page, covering topics such as Solid State Physics, Heat Treatment of Materials, Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites, Powder Metallurgy, Continuum Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, Materials Characterization, and more.
Is Your Background Qualified?
The MSI program is designed for graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related science and engineering disciplines.
But at VGU, we genuinely welcome students from all walks of life. Materials Science is inherently interdisciplinary. Whether your background is in Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, IT, or another field, what matters most is your curiosity, your willingness to learn, and your drive to connect ideas across subjects.
Students with a directly relevant science background typically have a head start — but many of our most motivated graduates come from non-traditional paths.
Depending on your academic background, select the corresponding pathway tab below to guide you through the application process.
Alumni Testimonials
Still unsure if MSI is right for you? Hear directly from our graduate:
"The joint program between VGU and OVGU is exactly what I had been dreaming of — studying abroad, at home. I get to interact with cutting-edge characterization machines myself, stay close to industry professionals, and build a truly international academic network. This program has it all: German academic rigor, hands-on lab access, real research, a path to Europe, and a genuine community. I strongly recommend MSI to curious students from all backgrounds — my own undergraduate degree was in Artificial Intelligence."
