Excursion: Vina Kraft Paper - Industrial Pulp Processing & Packaging Engineering

To see materials engineering in action at a massive scale, Master of Science in Materials Science (MSI) students at VGU visited the highly automated production facilities of Vina Kraft Paper in Binh Duong, Vietnam.

As the leading packaging paper manufacturer in the region, Vina Kraft Paper provided our students with an immersion into the industrial processing, chemical treatments, and structural properties of plant-based cellulose fibers.

🏛️ Cellulosic Materials Science: Technical Focus

Vina Kraft engineers guided the cohort through the entire paper-making pipeline, exploring key concepts in natural polymer processing:

  • Raw Pulp Preparation & Fiber Refining: Understanding how recycled paper is pulped, chemically cleaned, and mechanically refined to optimize the aspect ratio and surface area of cellulose fibers.
  • Hydrogen Bonding & Sheet Forming: Exploring the physics of sheet forming on continuous high-speed wire meshes, where the drying process induces massive hydrogen bonding between cellulose chains, establishing dry strength.
  • Quality Control & Structural Testing: Observing standard mechanical checks for industrial packaging—including burst strength, crush resistance (ring crush test), and tear propagation limits.
  • Sustainable Industrial Practices: Analyzing energy-efficient continuous belt drying, advanced water treatment plants, and closed-loop paper recycling systems.

!NOTEMSI Perspective: Paper is a complex, natural polymer matrix composite. Understanding how sizing agents, starch additives, and mechanical refining alter sheet structures is a perfect lesson in polymer composite engineering.

🚀 Bridging Science and Application

This excursion highlighted how materials science and chemical engineering principles are implemented on high-throughput industrial lines. By exploring large-scale manufacturing and automated quality control, VGU students gain invaluable insights into product development, process optimization, and industrial sustainability.

We thank the team at Vina Kraft Paper for their warm hospitality and for inspiring our future materials engineers!
