Lab Training: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) & XRD Research Lab Tour
On March 17th, Master of Science in Materials Science (MSI) students at the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) joined Dr. Ulf Betke for a specialized research lab tour exploring advanced micro- and nano-scale characterization.
Operating VGU's high-vacuum electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction suites, students connected the atomic-scale physics of structural and porous materials with practical, real-world engineering applications.
🔬 Deep Dive: Scanning Electron Microscopy & X-Ray Diffraction
During the tour, students explored the physical principles and operational guidelines of our core characterization tools:
- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Tour: Students observed the generation of high-energy electron beams under high vacuum. They analyzed secondary electron and backscattered electron detectors, producing high-resolution micrographs that resolve surface topography at nanometer scales.
- X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Demonstration: The cohort explored crystal lattice diffraction under Bragg’s Law ($n\lambda = 2d\sin\theta$). They monitored real-time scans of powdered crystalline materials, identifying phase composition, lattice symmetry, and crystallite size.
!NOTEWhy this matters for your Studies: Materials characterization is a foundational skill for both advanced research and industrial quality control. VGU MSI students gain hands-on training with research-grade SEM and XRD equipment, preparing them to enter R&D, metallurgy, semiconductor, and polymer engineering fields globally.
🚀 Connecting Theory to Industrial Practice
This laboratory tour reinforced key concepts from the Materials Characterization module, demonstrating how high-end microscopy and diffraction are used to troubleshoot failures, optimize alloys, and engineer new structural components.
We express our sincere thanks to Dr. Ulf Betke for delivering this inspiring and technically rich laboratory experience!
