Engineering Ceramics: Advanced Structural Ceramics with Flying Faculty Prof. Michael Scheffler

The Master of Science in Materials Science (MSI) program at Vietnamese-German University (VGU) was honored to welcome Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Michael Scheffler, Head of the Chair of Non-Metallic Materials at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU), Germany, to deliver the advanced Engineering Ceramics module.

As one of the most critical classes of structural and functional materials in modern technology, high-performance ceramics are highly valued for their extreme temperature resistance, superior hardness, exceptional chemical stability, and wear resistance. They are the backbone of aerospace turbines, high-speed automotive brakes, deep-sea drills, and biomedical implants.

🔬 Core Learning Pillars: Inside the Ceramics Module

Under the direct supervision of Prof. Scheffler, MSI students dive deep into the microstructural engineering of these robust non-metallic systems:

  • Atomic Bonding & Crystal Structures: Understanding the underlying ionic and covalent bonds that give ceramics their unmatched hardness and thermal stability.
  • Powder Processing & Sintering Science: Exploring industrial powder synthesis, green compact shaping, and high-temperature sintering mechanisms to eliminate porosity.
  • Microstructure-Property Mechanics: Correlating grain boundaries and phase distributions with mechanical and thermal performance.
  • Fracture Mechanics & Reliability: Mastering mathematical models of ceramic brittle fracture and Weibull statistics to design fail-safe structural elements.
  • Functional Ceramic Systems: Studying electrical, magnetic, and optical ceramic applications including solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and advanced sensors.

!NOTEFlying Faculty Advantage: The MSI program at VGU brings world-renowned German professors directly to Vietnam. Our students receive identical lectures, complete identical exams, and receive the same degree as students studying directly at OVGU Magdeburg in Germany.

🚀 Bridging Fundamental Science and High-Tech Industry

By combining rigorous solid-state chemistry and thermodynamics with practical engineering perspectives, the course empowers our students to design, characterize, and optimize structural materials for the most demanding environments on Earth and beyond.

We express our sincere appreciation to Prof. Michael Scheffler for his dedication and look forward to continuing this fruitful international partnership!
