Lab Training: Research Lab Module - Advanced Properties, Testing, & Analytics

Students in the Master of Science in Materials Science (MSI) program at the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) have completed a major milestone in their academic journey: the intensive Research Lab: Properties, Testing, and Analytics module.

Held in our state-of-the-art laboratory facility, this hands-on course allowed students to apply advanced thermodynamic and mechanical theories to real-world material synthesis, characterization, and quality control under strict safety protocols.

🔬 Experiential Learning: Key Lab Disciplines

Students rotated through three research-grade laboratory suites, gaining practical competencies required for modern materials engineering:

⚙️ 1. Powder Metallurgy & Mechanical Alloying

  • The Work: Mastering synthesis routes for high-melting-point refractory alloys. Students controlled high-energy ball milling parameters to refine particles and induce mechanical alloying at solid state.

⛓️ 2. Heat Treatment & Metallography

  • The Work: Quenching, tempering, and sintering alloys to systematically alter mechanical properties. Students prepared metallographic specimens through grinding and polishing, using chemical etchants to resolve grain structures.

🔬 3. High-End Material Characterization & Analytics

  • The Work: Operating advanced scientific characterization equipment to inspect milled powders and structural alloys.
  • Tools Used: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for phase identification, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for morphology, and laser diffraction for particle size analysis.

!NOTEFaculty Insight:"We believe that practical, lab-based learning is crucial for our students to not only understand the theoretical aspects but to also experience and analyze real material behaviors. This is the key to developing future material scientists and engineers."Dr. Georg Hasemann, Research Lab Lecturer (OVGU Magdeburg)

🚀 Preparing Globally Competitive Materials Experts

The hands-on competencies developed in these research labs prepare our students for professional success.

This rigorous training lays a solid foundation for their upcoming master's thesis—enabling them to execute independent, high-impact research projects in partnership with German universities and leading global R&D centers!
